Perfect for lightweight tripod needs with a compact prosumer video cameraSep 07, 2008
By Wildness Though I have used professional video tripods from Sachtler and Bogan Manfrotto in the past with full-sized professional video cameras, they are a bit of overkill for a prosumer grade compact HDV video camera. And, the inexpensive Silk tripods and the like are too shaky and flimsy to use for serious video work.
But for my Sony HC7 HDV video camera, Sony's VCT-80AV tripod is perfect. The legs are much sturdier than a lightweight consumer tripod, but it doesn't sacrifice lightness and compactness to achieve it. The head is a single stage fluid design that balances the camera nicely and provides for a fairly smooth pan and/or tilt motion. The quick release plate secures well to the tripod head and is easy to attach to the camera. The center column has a locking knob to secure it at whatever level you choose.
The best feature of the VCT-80AV is the panhandle with built in Sony remote control. It is comfortable and easy to use with all of its features well position for quick control of the camera.
the VCT-80AV is sturdy enough for light professional work, but compact and lightweight enough to carry on a backpacking trip.

A great tripod for interviewsMay 19, 2008

A great all around tripod to shoot events and interviews. I use it with my Sony HDR-SR12 camcorder. Easy to attach the connecting AV cable so you can control the camera's zoom (fast or slow) and start and stop recording. The tripod does a lot for what it costs and it is very stable.
If your uses are for fast action sports requiring fast pans, you may want to consider a more expensive carbon fiber or aluminum tripod, the Sony VCT-80AV is made of hard plastic. These heavy dudy tripods have separate heads with mechanisms that facilitates smooth tight pans and are more suitable in rough environments.

Very pleased!Mar 03, 2010

I've been looking for a video tripod with a fluid head that was also reasonably priced. I wasn't having much luck with that! After purchasing a new Sony camcorder and reviewing accessories, I noticed this tripod. I was apprehensive as there were some remarks about the head not being very fluid. I received the tripod today and opened up the package right away to check it and I'm VERY pleased with the movement in all directions. I've finally found the tripod I've been looking for. The remote control handle is just icing on the cake! I highly recommend this tripod!

Light, stable, easy to use, perfect for Sony prosumer camerasDec 21, 2009

I have a Sony Z5 camera, so I know I should've bought the 300 dollar version of this tripod, which is probably more sturdy and durable. THERE ARE MANY SONY TRIPOD MODELS, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK ALL OF THEM OUT BEFORE YOU PICK ONE. Sometimes it's not very clear what the differences are, though... Since I could only afford this one, I have to admit it's pretty awesome considering the price. We all know a decent pro tripod costs at least 300 bucks, but this one does a lot of stuff for a third of that. Bubble level, very smooth panning and tilting, relatively tight and stable, remote control zooming, recording and photo taking on the handle... but to be lightweight and inexpensive, it had to sacrifice something: this one has some parts made in cheap plastic, like the hand crank to raise the height and the locking plate. Treat these with care and don't leave them in direct sunlight, and it'll probably last a few years. Definitely not the last tripod you'll every buy, but does the job.

Great Tripod, Nice Sturdy FeelMar 18, 2011
By James Thomas I ordered this tripod to use with my new Sony HD camcorder. It works great, looks great, and feels great. The remote control on the handle is a great plus to have, especially because I film my daughter's sports contests. I have nothing negative to say about the product. It is more expensive on the Sony website. Good thing Amazon.com is here.
