5Excellent value and a very decent lens!Aug 06, 2007
By S. Willhite
When I ordered this lens, I was just like most people ... skeptical of a lens at this price and questioning just how much I would use it. Well, the lens delivers better quality than I hoped for and I find myself using it more than I initially expected. Sure, it's manual on my Olympus Evolt 500, but that didn't even slow me down. Moon shots, animals at a distance, even objects acroiss a small lake - this lens performs and performs well. I find myself looking at potential subjects differently and taking pictures that I would have just passed up.

If you are use to going manual, then this is a great buy. The images it produces are sharp and clear ... as long as you go in with a high shutter speed or tripod. You be the judge for yourself, but I am VERY happy with this lens.

4Good valueDec 10, 2007
By John A. Van Devender "Gadfly"
47th St. Photo is an excellent vendor. My order shipped quickly and was well packaged. However, the first time I used the lens, when I went to take it off my E-500 something stripped the threads. The T-mount adapter was probably the culprit, it might have had a burr on it. Anyway, the lens threads were ruined. I did not drop the lens or abuse it in anyway. 47th Street photo did not blink an eye. They sent me instructions, I returned the lens and got a replacement and another T-mount adapter right away. Kudos.

The lens itself is average, low-end quality optics, entirely sufficient for ordinary shooting on a limited budget. It has a narrow depth of field because of its fixed aperture so be prepared for some close focusing problems. You will probably need, as I have, to take several photos and vary the focus very slightly with each one in order to get the degree of crispness on your primary subject. I have taken about 30 photos with it thus far and am learning the lens. Don't expect photos you can print in large format right away but I believe, with proper lighting and patience, I will be able to get some excellent photos that I would have been beyond the range of my other lenses. However, keep in mind, you are getting what you pay for. It's a good lens for the price and if you are out in the high Sierras and you drop it, well, you won't be out of pocket for too much.

Like I said, good value for the price.

5A good addition to your lenses baggageOct 28, 2006

If you like manual control, this is for you. This 1000mm focus (equivalent 35mm film), put in your hands, for a few dollar, the capability to take large telephotos. Extremely light, you can handle very comfortable, and in high light conditions, with 1/500 sec shutter speeds or less, you can go bare hand. With not so good light conditions, tripod is mandatory.

3A reasonable substituteMay 30, 2009

This Telephoto Mirror Lens is light and handy, affordable and easy to carry. It fits my Olympus 420 well. I can make the shootings by using Manual or Aperture Prioity modes for exposure and Manual mode for focusing. One disadvantage of this lens is it is difficult to get sharp pictures, even for still objects. The F/8 is preset so the depth of field is very narrow. Besides, mirror lens may not be as sharp as regular lens. In short, it is good if you only need to take 500MM pictures once a while. It is not a good alternatives for those who always take pictures with long telephoto lens, not to say for professionals.

3Nice for learning and certain occasionsNov 01, 2010

Too be very clear this product is not meant for anything that moves. That includes photography of animals, or sporting events. Also, don't look to use it as a telescope at night unless there is a willingness to micromanage shutter speed.

There is a sweet spot and many situations for the lens. First, this lens NEEDS an olympus camera with in body stabilization and a relatively high ISO setting, 400 works well. Don't try to focus on anything less than 40-50ft, colors that are bland, or shady. This camera really performs with bright popping colors at a distance. For instance, I took some very successful shots of fall leaves at the top of a tree with a rich blue sky. Also, a bright white car over 150ft away. Good situations are stationary or slow moving objects at a great distance, like a balloon event, sunset, mountain close up, rock formations which can be difficult to gain proper access.

Keep in mind this lens doesn't react well to haze or adverse weather. Avoid cloudy days, some of the best times are right after rain fall when the air is clean, sun bright, and everything has a glossy color from the rain. Spring would be the best time of year to learn how to use the lens properly. If you are looking for something not fixed be prepared to spend $1000 for a nice bigma which is a very nice lens with auto focus and dynamic range. It was not until experimenting with other lenses that I knew how to properly handle this one with patience.

Pro: cheap, good for spring, stationary or very slow moving objects, great for colorful days or events.

Con: focus is unless closer than 50ft, washes out bland colors, ill suited for cloudy days or anything but direct sunlight, frustrating unless comfortable in manual mode.

Tip: Sometimes a lens that demands large amounts of light is great, think of using it when the sun seems almost too bright. For example, scenic pictures during winter when the sun is reflecting off snow. The reflective lens will cut down on glare. This will give greater flexibility.
