Probably still the best sub-$10 webcam.Mar 13, 2009
By John Wolfe
"foodie & techie"
Pros: This webcam is dirt cheap. If you intend on setting up a home surveillance system (or any other project that needs several low-quality webcams), The labtec 1200 makes a fairly decent webcam.
Cons: The Labtec 1200 captures at a very low resolution and framerate. While 640x480(VGA) photo capture is advertised, don't let this mislead you, it actually captures video at 352x288@5fps.
Other Thoughts: If you just need a webcam for the purpose of viewing a room, or allowing people to see you when you talk, then this is fine for your needs. However, if you intend on doing anything where more depth and quality is needed, you're probably going to want to shell out more money for something nicer.
Also, this webcam is fully supported under the linux kernel (I think since 2.6.27?). Cheese seems to handle it just fine, although occasionally I do get frame overflows from gspca, causing blue speckles to briefly appear in random frames (it's only two or three pixels, so it isn't particularly noticeable). The only thing I truely dislike about this webcam is the palette. It uses it's own encoding to send the frames, so programs like "motion" can't easily create mjpeg streams (which is what I wanted to use this for). I haven't quite figured out a way to get it working yet, apparently there is a wrapper library you can use (http://m560x-driver.wiki.sourceforge.net/libv4l) to convert the pac207 palette to YUV420/YU12 before it gets read by motion.

For the price you can't complain.Aug 19, 2009
By Ralphie My girlfriend and I have a long distance relationship and there is no greater invention for people like us then the webcam. We're both on a budget so the labtec 1200 seemed like a logical choice. Installing it was extremely easy and it has a very nice adjustable head. This adjustment option makes it easy for my girlfriend to always see me regardless of what weird position I may be sitting in with my labtop. Quality is actually fairly decent. Nothing amazing but it captures at a good enough speed that we can see each clearly. Of course not well at all in the dark but with sufficient lighting, it does the job. With a price like this you really can't complain and if you're on a budget and want an easy to use webcam to chat with your friends then I recommend this one a lot.

My nephew loves it.Dec 09, 2009
By K. Andrews This is a second-hand review. I bought this for my nephew who is spending a year in France after graduating from college. We use Skype to stay in touch, and although he could see me, his computer was not webcam equipped, so I could not see him. He is very happy with this webcam, he said it was very easy to start up and use. From the other end, I give it high marks for the picture it is sending me when we skype. The price is very reasonble, and it performs as advertised.

Nice little gadget.Feb 18, 2009
By C. Duty No brainer. All you need is to plug and set.You can adjust the angle, take still photo, etc. I use this mainly when I talk with my friends all over the world via Skype. My friends can see me as we talk. I would recommend to anybody.

Does not work with Windows 7Jan 21, 2010
By Matthew E. Essner The reviews all said that this camera was just fine for the price, and I wasn't expecting to be wowed, but what I didn't find anywhere was that this camera is NOT compatible with Windows 7, until after I received the product and spent over an hour trying to install the device to my computer. After a phone call to customer service, they confirmed that it will not work with Windows 7 and suggested the Microsoft LifeCam, and when I reviewed the Microsoft LifeCam, there was a comment that the Microsoft LifeCam is compatible with Windows 7. The LabTec may be a good price, but not worth a penny if it won't work with your computer.
