4Macro RIng flashFeb 22, 2008
By Irving J. Buchbinder "DrGnu"
This is an inexpensive macro ring flash. Its not gaudy, has few bells and whistles but does work with the Cannon 400 (xTi) that I have.

There's some getting used to for the flash. It flatten's things as I've come to expect from a ring flasham. There don't seem to be any hot nor dull spots. Clinical colors are rendered correctly although I do mine in Rawstudio for post production anyway.

The attachment rings are ok, but only have 1/2 to 2/3 of a thread onto anything and don't really hold VERY securely The only other downside (annoying part) is that the ring and power supply are a single unit held together by the cord, making it inconvenient at best to stow anywhere. On the upside the powerpack and flash unit are quite light weight. Ive taken several 100 shots and not had to replace the batteries in the power pack (yet). My choice would be to use disposables, and as soon as these are done, I will and will let you know if that makes any difference. I can tell, as the unit works on that there is longer lag between recharge (now about 8 seconds - originally about 1.5-3 seconds).

I use the camera/flash for clinical photography and its behaved admirably. For an inexpensive addition to your armementarium, and a working e-ttl flash, I would recommend this unit.

3Good, when it works.Jul 03, 2008
By Brian C. Vanderpryt "Vander"
I bought this flash for my Canon Rebel XTi (400D). I've taken some excellent photos with this flash, which I will try to post. However, I have an issue where sometimes the camera will not recognize the flash and will auto-expose as if it's not there (exposure goes from 1/60sec to 2sec). For the record, I always ensure my batteries are fresh, and I have many other flashes. This is not a camera problem.

I'll give it 3 stars, and if it performed every time I would give it 5. For the price, worth a try. Especially if you have a good macro lens (my sample shots were with a Tamron 90mm).

3Wrks most of the timeFeb 20, 2011

I have SFD 14C. My experience is like that of one other reviewer; when it works it is quite OK for the price (in comparison with the high prices of those highly-priced ring flashes that work every time). This is probably to prevent those who can afford the real thing from using this. The power is not more (I have impression it's a bit less) than the built-in flash. This is OK for macro, but not necessarily for other uses.

There are 2 problems - sometimes it just won't flash (this is probably bad contact) and sometimes it will work but only occasionally flash weakly or not at all. But most of the time it will work, if its seated properly. The shoe attachment and contact do not appear too reliable.
